The Power of Prayer

“Then Jesus told them . . . about their need to pray always and not to lose heart” (Luke 18:1)

To the average modern believer, prayer is often the most misunderstood, and undervalued, aspect of faith.

Indeed, many clam up in group prayer and some even get too nervous to participate.

They think that group prayer is about sounding Christian – saying the right words with strong articulation.

Not so.

Prayer is simply dialogue with God.

It is seeing life from His perspective.

That is why people pray “in Jesus’ name” – it is to pray, essentially, for that which Jesus approves.

Personal prayer time is extremely important in each individual’s spiritual journey.

People make such a big deal of it, here, too, though. They wouldn’t pray in the group because they were nervous.

But then they won’t pray at home because they either don’t have time, or don’t know what to say.

If you find yourself in this struggle, hopefully these tips will help:

Your posture is not important – stand, kneel, lay down, sit; whatever just get comfortable (you can even pray on the go). What is important is your attitude and your honesty.

If you have an attitude of humility, knowing that you are nothing and would have nothing apart from God, then you may approach Him with your request.

What can you ask for?

Anything!

Jesus exclaims that we may ask God for anything. “I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.” (Mark 11:24)

If you truly want something (as long as it’s isn’t evil or completely self-serving), then God will give it to you or equip you with tools get it.

God will never withhold something you absolutely need.

He will, however, work out His miracles in His own time.

If you want big things, you’ve got to pray big prayers.

But be sure that your heart is right with God, that you have repented, and that you have forgiven those you have held grudges against.

Prayer is a major facet of the Christian faith – an invaluable tool. It is the ability to converse with the Creator of the Universe at the speed of thought.

Don’t waste it by being afraid you you will embarrass yourself by fumbling your words.

Eloquence isn’t important.

The conversation is.

Just start talking.

Amen!
