Living Hope

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By His great mercy He has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you” (1 Pet. 1:3-4)

It is incredible to reflect on the infinite blessings God provides every day!

Peter’s joy practically jumps off the page as he sings praises to God. He then goes on to explain three gifts we receive through the resurrection power of Jesus.

The first gift is the most necessary: Mercy

Without mercy, there is no forgiveness.

It is mercy which enables us to receive the second gift, the rebirth transformation, which puts sin to death, granting us salvation.

Putting sin to death in the new birth grants us the third gift, a living hope, because we are finally able to overcome the flesh and subscribe to the Spirit.

This living hope encompasses more than the prospect of an afterlife in heaven; it provides the peace, love, and joy that permeate the believer’s life here on Earth.

Peter also outlines four characteristics of our inheritance:

We may rejoice in the promise that our inheritance in Jesus is imperishable¹ (it cannot be destroyed), undefiled² (it cannot be tampered with), unfading³ (it cannot pass away or “expire”) and, most importantly, it is kept for us in heaven.⁴

There is no safer place in existence than the halls of heaven, where our inheritance is under the personal protection of Almighty God.

A living hope indeed!

Praise God!

Amen!
