“’What have You to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are, the Holy One of God.’ But Jesus rebuked him saying, ‘Be silent and come out of him!’ And the unclean spirit, convulsing and crying with a loud voice, came out” (Mark 1:24-26)
Even the demons recognize the Son of God, and they tremble with fear.
The demon here had possessed a man in Capernaum, infiltrated the synagogue, and identified the Savior.
The demon not only knew the presence of Jesus, it recognized His power, too.
The demon’s bravado and disrespectful manner toward Christ, derisively asking what business He had, is reflective of how many people perceive Jesus today.
The demon takes on the “tough-guy” role…
“What do you think you’re doing here, huh? You gonna destroy me? I’d like to see you try, buddy! I know who you are, the Holy One of God. Why I ought to…”
But the bluster is all an act: everyone knows it. And Jesus doesn’t buy it.
“Be silent, you fool!” Jesus exclaims. “Come out of that man this instant!”
And the demon had no choice but to obey.
Not anything or anyone can deny the authority of Christ.
Do not be deceived: Jesus Christ is Lord.
There is no other.
The demons know it, and they tremble.
We know it, and we worship.
If Christ is for you, who can be against you?
Nobody that matters.
